Three-Card Spread: Past, Present & Future

Updated 2026-03-29 · 11 min read

The three-card line is one of the most versatile layouts in tarot. Traditionally mapped to Past → Present → Future, it tells a short story: where you have been, what is active now, and what is opening or emerging ahead.

Position meanings

  • Past: roots, prior choices, habits, or events that shape the situation.
  • Present: the current energy, challenge, or mindset—what needs honest attention.
  • Future: not a locked prophecy; read it as trajectory, advice, or near outlook if nothing shifts.

Sample spread (traditional cards)

Imagine asking: “What helps me understand my path right now?” A fictional pull might be The Hermit (retreat and inner counsel), Wheel of Fortune (change and cycles), and The Sun (clarity and vitality)—a narrative from introspection through motion toward openness.

Alternative three-card frames

Swap labels to fit your question: Situation / Action / Outcome, Mind / Body / Spirit, or You / Other / Bridge. The mechanics stay the same; only the story you tell changes.
